Friends of GTCC Library BoardMeeting Notes – September 18, 2008
Participants: Margot Horney, Beverley Gass, Howard Millican, Jennifer Noga, Don Forbes, Matilda Kirby-Smith, Carolyn Schneider FOL and GTCC Alumni Trip Margot reviewed the details of the trip planned for the Dordogne region in France from June 18 – 26, 2009. The trip arrangements are through Gohagen, a company who work especially with colleges and universities and museum to organize travel excursions. Participants added mailing labels to brochures that will be sent through inter-campus mail at the same time that Gohagen is mailing to GTCC Alumni and previous travelers. Building Concept Plan Beverley reviewed the LRC Building Concept plan that had recently been completed by consultant Judy Close through an LSTA Grant. Turning the concept plan into a reality is the next challenge. Beverley intends to start seeking support in the community for the project as the college awaits any decision made by the NCCCS to go for a statewide bond referendum for facilities. A renovated library building is with other projects ranked number one by the college and sent to NCCCS. The group discussed the idea of doing some sort of fundraiser for the FOL. This most likely should be a “grown-up” event. Perhaps a wine and cheese and book-related event would be a good idea. Maybe this event should be linked to the opening of the art show. We tossed about some ideas but did not make any firm plans. We will continue to discuss at a future meeting. Program Plans for 2008-09 The Board decided to develop programs for the year based on some of the pictures that came with the “Picturing America” set. The set was provided to the library through a successful grant application prepared by Jan Keimig. Through the program GTCC’s library received a handsome set of pictures that depict the history of the United States as expressed through its art and architecture. The set of pictures are large photos of American art with an extensive study guide. Carolyn and Margot volunteered to get together to plan the programs. We agreed to produce placemats again this year for the Culinary Dining Room. Building Student Support Board members supported the idea of a special event to bring student attention to the library and to its services and encouraged staff to “go for it.” A student open house will be planned for later this semester. Some suggestions for possible activities are a scavenger hunt, library bingo, wheel of fortune. The FOL Board put their blessing on the idea. Membership Appeal Don will make sure that info about membership is put into the library newsletter. Generally, the secretary does not remember or have notes that we really did much with this one. Maybe she talked too much.
The meeting adjourned.
