Friends of the GTCC Library

Meeting Record

May 15, 2003

Participants: Don Forbes, Beverley Gass, Matilda Kirby-Smith, Aubre Rice, Carolyn

Schneider, president, Dick Statham

Marketing/Membership Idea

It has come to the attention of the president that the Culinary Department does not have placemats to use in their dining rooms but would be interested in having some.

Therefore, a useful idea would be to donate placemats to the Culinary Department for their use in 2003-04 that would be a “Friends of the Library” placemat and include the Friends program schedule.  Those who dine there may also be interested in the programs of the Friends.

President Schneider has asked Chef Gardiner if he would be interested in having placemats donated and he said “yes.”

Those at the meeting thought this was a good idea and Matilda Kirby-Smith volunteered to design it.  Aubre Rice knows someone who might donate the printing of the mats and will check with him.  We agreed that we wanted the content to be the schedule of programs, some info about a trip to visit important libraries (see no. 3 below), and include a contact for anyone who might want more information.

Program ideas

Below is a list of possible programs for next year.  Decided that we would try for 2 programs fall semester and 2 in spring semester. Working with this list, Carolyn and Beverley will finalize four programs for the year.

  • Lee Kinard –talking about something book-related
  • Cameron Kent, channel 12– has published a book.
  • Orson Scott Card –this is the authorselected for the “All-College Read” for this fall.  Carolyn will talk to Carrie White, English faculty, about any role that the Friends of the Library might have.  Or is there some related event that we could host?
  • Mark Richard – author-suggested by Matilda.
  • How to Buy and Sell on E-Bay
  • Library Showcase event –to let students and community know what we have.
  • An open house, show and tell event.  Maybe a “library showoff.” (Cynthia Graves and Katherine Phipps, Community Service Coordinators at GSO and

HP are interested in supporting this.)

  • A book sale – ask faculty to donate books.  (Ashe County Public Library makes $12,000 yearly on theirs).  Include used textbooks (faculty copies), library books, and other faculty or community member donated books.  Aubre suggested that maybe we should actually sell books through a web site where she has sold many of her college textbooks.  As a trial, Don Forbes gave her 3 discarded library books and Dick Statham will send her the ISBN of the electrical codebook.
  • Genealogy– this program could link to family history assignments from Jeff Kinnard and Dennis Burnette, two GTCC faculty.
  • Modern Spiritual fiction– Beverley heard 3-4 local writers in this genre at the O’Henry Festival.  She will look up their names and report back.
  • Jim Carmichael– this professor in the School of Library and Information Science at UNC-G is a prolific writer and speaker in library history.
  • Best Friend Award – let’s do one again this year.
  • Friends of the Library Tour–organize a trip to London and its important libraries and other literary sites as a Friends’ event.  We could have some preliminary meetings that focus on these libraries.  Perhaps Don Etherington could offer advice on what to see and do.
  • Howard Millican– an “Out of Africa” program where Howard tells about her visit to Africa.
  • “Navigating a University Library” – this might be a workshop co-sponsored by Arts and Sciences and the Friends or just the Library itself.  Would include a tour of a university library.
